Codependency & Marital/Family Discord |
|
Codependency is a condition that results in a dysfunctional relationship between the codependent and other people. A codependent is addicted to helping someone; they need to be needed. The urge the codependent feels to be needed is so strong that the codependent will deliberately cause another person to need them; this behavior is called enabling. The enabler will purposefully overlook someone abusing a child, will call in sick for someone suffering from addiction, will put roadblocks to prevent their child from becoming independent, or even keep a sick family member from getting the treatment that would make them well. Codependence is...an addiction to being needed.
Drug addiction can lead to severe family discord. Marital disharmony can arise, leading to separation and divorce. Interpersonal conflict can also become a constant, sometimes escalating to levels of physical violence. The toll that addiction has on the family unit spans all aspects of family living – including physical and mental health, finances, social development, marital well-being and peace in the home.
