General Info
Treatment Center

Treatment Centers offer a safe and supportive environment for recovery from drug addiction and/or alcoholism. Because addiction is chronic and progressive, intervention and treatment, usually at a treatment center, is essential. An inpatient experience at a treatment center holds many advantages over outpatient programs, counseling, and/or twelve-step meetings alone. Treatment centers provide individuals time to reprioritize and restructure their lives in a healing environment without the distractions of daily life. The River Source is a naturopathic treatment center for alcohol and drug dependency located in the Phoenix metro area (Mesa). Our treatment center offers detoxification services, medical supervision (under the care of a naturopathic physician), nutritional therapy, daily yoga, and daily exercise in additional to the more traditional treatment center services. We also provide individual counseling, group counseling, education, and daily participation in 12-step programs of recovery at our treatment center. The River Source is a holistic treatment center which means we focus on all aspects of recovery – mind, body and spirit. An inpatient treatment center can stop the cycle of addiction/alcoholism. Regardless of age, length of addiction, or type of addiction, a treatment center can be a new beginning, a place of rejuvenation - and a place where miracles happen. A treatment center, like the River Source, which is comprehensive and multidimensional, provides the individual a real opportunity to change. With change, there is hope.

What is Al-Anon?The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.

Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any cause. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary contributions.

Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic.

Intervention

Intervention:

When someone with a drug or alcohol problem cannot or is not willing to see and face the problem, an intervention may be what is necessary to save that person's life.  Healing can begin to happen only when a person's loved ones decide that they are no longer willing to be a part of the problem, but rather, a part of the solution.  The majority of families that need intervention services never call to get them, yet the majority of addicts and alcoholics intervened on go willingly into treatment that day!  No two interventions are the same.  Different families need different interventions.  Some people need to sit with their family and friends and be lovingly confronted, some people need a peaceful talk on the porch, and some people need more or less of either of those or something completely different.  The initial family education and fact finding consultation is vital in deciding what is right for you and your family.  Using a loving, yet concerned and always honest approach, you can help your loved one down the right path today.  At times you need a professional to be there and at times you can get educated and proceed yourself, once again, every family is different in that regard.  I encourage you to call me and let's discuss your situation.  I am happy to help you decide what path to take to begin your families healing process.

Geffen Liberman a team member of the River Source staff, a licensed independent substance abuse counselor, a certified substance abuse counselor level two, and a certified professional life coach.  He has been working with addicts/alcoholics and their families for over 11 years and has performed hundreds of interventions during that time period.  Please contact him at 480.388.1495 or at getwell@glcounseling.com

Using the Nutritional Model
1.What is the purpose and goals/objectives for mandatory participation in naturopathic medical and nutritional care?

1. The primary reasons for starting the recovery process using the nutritional model is to jump start the physical body. This not only improves an individual’s overall energy and sense of well-being, but even more importantly it augments their cognitive awareness such that they may then more clearly recognize and process the counterproductive life choices they have made.

a. Why is this called detoxification?

a. Although an individual may have gone through a brief ‘detox’ in a hospital or outpatient setting, this can hardly be considered a thorough detoxification. Yes, the brunt of the withdrawal from the alcohol or drug in question may be overcome, but in reality it is only with the aid of a healthy diet and an intense exercise and nutritional regimen when the real detoxification begins. With these components, the primary detox pathways in the liver, gastrointestinal system, and skin are stimulated into greater activity—thus resulting in a much greater release of accumulated toxins. Through this process, the body becomes increasingly competent at repairing the biochemical ravages created by the drugs and/or alcohol, thus creating a state of balanced function throughout the individual. The ultimate manifestation of this is the client’s awareness of naturally feeling much better overall than they have felt in years.

b.What benefits does this provide to an alcohol addicted person?

b. The benefits to the alcohol addicted person are many. First, alcoholics frequently have not only an impaired mucous lining of the gastrointestinal tract, but also poor pancreatic function—both of which impair the absorption of basic nutrients in food. The intravenous approach bypasses this mechanism altogether and affords a much healthier nutrient status in their systems while the repair process occurs in the gastrointestinal system. Secondly, through the above the time it takes to reach a clearer cognitive state is tremendously reduced, which allows clients the ability to more successfully grasp the concepts of addiction and recovery.

c.What benefits does this provide to a drug addicted person?

c. The benefits to drug addicts are in many respects the same as those for an alcoholic. For instance, it is well-established that in opiate withdrawal cases they have essentially no appetite—a situation that can last for up to a few weeks after the most acute withdrawal phase has ended. By the use of intravenous and oral nutritional supplementation, the drawback of not obtaining any or enough oral nutrition through foods is minimized—thus facilitating the process of biochemical rebuilding. Another example is with those individuals addicted to methamphetamines, as it is not uncommon to observe various skin lesions and/or very poor dentition—both of which are simply a reflection of an extremely poor nutrient status. By providing the essentials in the oral and intravenous nutrient program, the client’s nutrient status is brought back up to normal in a very rapid time. This allows the skin lesions to resolve much more quickly than if they had not received these therapies (although certain issues with dentition must be resolved via extraction as they are simply beyond repair).

d.What criteria(s) are used to dettermine the continuation of this medical and nutritional care beyond the initial 30 days of detoxification?

d. Continued use of our primary treatment is based on ongoing assessments of each individual’s basic functioning (i.e. general appetite, energy levels, sleeping patterns, and elimination habits) and of their cognitive awareness. Although we certainly could order high cost lab work (far beyond typical blood work, which gives paltry information regarding the specifics of nutrient status), the cost is generally prohibitive. Regardless, in the end it is always the client’s response to therapy that gives the most valuable information and thus dictates future courses of action when it comes to nutritional interventions. After 30 days, the vast majority of individuals need to receive ongoing intravenous therapy multiple times per week is eliminated. At the most, they may find benefit in receiving an IV a few times per month for the next couple of months, after which point it can usually be discontinued entirely. The oral nutritional regimen, however, is continued daily so as to continue to augment an individual’s nutrient status while on their own as they work to overcome a lifetime of poor dietary habits. The only situations in which a second month of intensive IV therapy may be needed are methadone detox cases.

On a broader note, the standard 30 day programs are only enhanced in success by adding an additional 30 or 60 day component giving clients an opportunity to have increased understanding and practice of the recovery concepts they have learned during their first 30 days.

2.Will the River Source accept other types of detoxification (medical or social) for the individual prior to entering the River Source? If no, why not?

2. The River Source does and will accept medically detoxed clients from a variety of agencies. Due to our specific protocol using intravenous nutrition and an NMD for detox, the standard pricing does continue to apply.

EnablingMost of the time family and friends who try to "help" the alcoholic unknowingly make things worse by enabling them. They are actually making it much easier for him/her to continue in the progression of this deadly disease.

This phenomenon called enabling, which takes various forms, all of which have the same negative effect -- allowing an alcoholic to avoid the consequences of his/her actions. This allows the alcoholic to continue along his/her drinking ways, secure in the knowledge that no matter how much he/she screws up, somebody will always be there to rescue him/her from his/her mistakes.

Here are the differences between helping and enabling.

Helping is doing something for someone who is not capable of doing it for themselves. Enabling is doing something for someone when they could and should be doing it for themselves.

Enabling creates a atmosphere in which the alcoholic can comfortably continue his unacceptable behavior. Here at the River Source we work with families and friends to stop the enabling and help the alcoholic on the road to recovery.

How to Sabotage Your RecoveryHow To Sabotage Your Recovery

Pretending everything is ok - Reluctant to disclose a difficulty you may be having for fear of looking bad or being judged.

Perfectionism - Having an attitude that you have to be perfect in recovery. Believing having negative emotions means you are not working a good program.

Having unrealistic expectations - Expecting your family or friends to trust you. Setting yourself up for disappointment.

Not recognizing accomplishments - Focusing too much on defects and not acknowledging victories in recovery, which leaves you feeling defeated.

Being in Victim Posture - Blaming others, criticizing others, being overly concerned with others. Focusing on others prevents you from focusing on yourself. Victims do not stay sober.

Being the center of attention - Dominating conversations, interrupting others, insisting others hear your opinion on everything, or wanting to be the center of attention. This is a form of selfishness and prevents you from seeing how you can be helpful to others because you are self-consumed.

Confusing self-concern with selfishness - Interpreting a desired change in your life with being selfish.

Keeping secrets - People who keep secrets in recovery typically do not stay sober. It is a reflection of being dishonest or deceptive.

Minimizing difficulty - Attempting to make an event or incident sound as if it isn’t that big of a deal or it is unimportant to discuss when in reality it needs to be addressed.

Self-Delusion & Denial in chemical DependencySELF-DELUSION and DENIAL IN CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY
Paul Fischer, M.A. © 2000

WHAT IS SELF-DELUSION?

Self-delusion is a mechanism by which human beings protect themselves from something threatening to them by blocking knowledge of that thing from their awareness. It is an unconscious process, which can be seen, for example, when a person is suffering from an obviously terminal illness, but seems unaware of that fact. It is a buffer against unacceptable reality.

The self-delusion of alcoholics/addicts consists of their lack of awareness of their excessive and/or inappropriate use of chemicals and the harmful consequences. They do not have the basic understanding that they have an illness. The reason for this blindness is that, along with the gradual development of the illness, a denial system develops which protects them from knowledge that this is happening.

The alcoholic/addict does not know they are deluded and are incapable of identifying their self-delusions on their own. It would be like asking a fish “What is water?” The fish cannot answer because it is surrounded by water all the time. The fish cannot distinguish water from itself.

WHAT IS DENIAL?

To deny is to have knowledge of something and to ignore its consequences. The alcoholic/addict may acknowledge they have a problem with alcohol or drugs, yet they continue to drink or use in spite of the consequences.

Denial is a core element of the illness. It can be found in all alcoholics/addicts. Denial is the fatal aspect of alcoholism and drug addiction. It impairs the judgment of the alcoholic/addict and results in self-delusion, which keeps them locked into a destructive pattern.

Here are some of the most common forms of self-delusion and denial:

SELF-DELUSION
Maintaining that something is not so, which is in fact so; insisting that alcohol or drugs is not a problem despite obvious evidence that it is a problem and is so perceived by others. The alcoholic/addict’s dishonesty is a form of denial. He or she frequently does not tell the truth but is unaware of this.

MINIMIZING
Admitting to some degree a problem with alcohol or drugs, but in such a way that it appears to be much less serious or significant than is actually the case. The alcoholic/addict will use terms like “the only time”, “except for”, “it wasn’t that much”.

BLAMING
Denying responsibility for certain behaviors and maintaining that the responsibility lies with someone or something else. The behavior is not denied, but its cause is placed “out there”, not within the person.

RATIONALIZING
Offering reasons and excuses before engaging in behavior. The alcoholic/addict may acknowledge the action is unsound, yet they proceed with the behavior they are rationalizing.

JUSTIFYING
These are the reasons and alibis the alcoholic/addict provides after engaging in destructive behavior. They provide a reason other than alcoholism/addiction to explain behavior related to chemical usage. The behavior is not denied, but an inaccurate explanation of its cause is given.

INTELLECTUALIZING
Avoiding emotional and personal awareness of the problem of alcoholism/addiction by dealing with it by being general, analytical, or theorizing. A person who intellectualizes is often referred to as “Being in their head”.

DIVERSION
Changing the subject to avoid a topic that is threatening to the chemical usage.

HOSTILITY
Becoming angry and irritated when reference is made to chemical usage and related behavior. This is a good way to avoid the issue as it serves to back people off. If you are angry with someone when he or she talks about a certain topic, that person is going to change the subject or avoid bringing the topic up to you again.

SELF-DELUSION IS AUTOMATIC
Self-delusion is not a matter of deliberate lying or willful deception. It is a serious psychological mechanism, which operates unconsciously. The alcoholic/addict does not know what is true or false concerning their usage and its consequences. The denial system distorts their perception and impairs their judgment so that they become self-deluded, incapable of accurate self-awareness.

DENIAL IS PROGRESSIVE
The denial system becomes increasingly more pervasive and entrenched as the illness of alcoholism/addiction progresses. In the early stages, it is minimal. By the time an individual’s illness is sufficiently advanced, the problem begins to appear serious in the eyes of others and the denial system shields the alcoholic/addict from seeing what is really happening.

Top 10 myths about addiction and treatmentTop 10 Myths and Misconceptions
About Alcoholism or Drug Addiction

Myth 1: Drug addiction is voluntary behavior. You start out occasionally using alcohol or other drugs, and that is a voluntary decision. But as time passes, something happens, and you become a compulsive drug user. Why? Because over time, continued use of addictive drugs changes your brain - in dramatic, toxic ways at times, more subtly at others, but virtually always in ways that result in compulsive and even uncontrollable drug use.

Myth 2: Drug addiction is a character flaw. Drug addiction is a brain disease. Every type of drug – from alcohol to heroin – has its own mechanism for changing how the brain functions. But regardless of the addiction, the effects on the brain are similar, ranging from changes in the molecules and cells that make up the brain to mood and memory processes – even on motor skills such as walking and talking. The drug becomes the single most powerful motivator in your life.

Myth 3: You can’t force someone into treatment. Treatment does not have to be voluntary. Those coerced into treatment by the legal system can be just as successful as those who enter treatment voluntarily. Sometimes they do better, as they are more likely to remain in treatment longer and to complete the program. In 1999, over half of adolescents admitted into treatment were directed to do so by the criminal justice system.

Myth 4: Treatment for drug addiction should be a one-shot deal. Like many other illnesses, drug addiction typically is a chronic disorder. Some people can quit drug use “cold turkey,” or they can stop after receiving treatment just one time at a rehabilitation facility. But most people who abuse drugs require longer-term treatment and, in many instances, repeated treatments.

Myth 5: We should strive to find a “magic bullet” to treat all forms of drug abuse. There is no “one size fits all” form of drug treatment, much less a magic bullet that suddenly will cure addiction. Different people have different drug abuse-related problems, and they respond very differently to similar forms of treatment, even when they’re abusing the same drug. As a result, drug addicts need an array of treatments and services tailored to address their unique needs. Finding an approach that is personally effective can mean trying out several different doctors or treatment centers before a “match” is found between patient and program.

Myth 6: People don’t need treatment. They can stop using drugs if they really want to. It is extremely hard for people addicted to drugs to achieve and maintain long-term abstinence. Research shows that when long-term drug use actually changes a person’s brain function, it causes them to crave the drug even more, making it increasingly difficult to quit without effective treatment. Intervening and stopping substance abuse early is important, as children become addicted to drugs much faster than adults and risk greater physical, mental and psychological harm.
Myth 7: Treatment just doesn’t work. Studies show drug treatment reduces drug use by 40 to 60 percent and can significantly decrease criminal activity during and after treatment. There is also evidence that drug addiction treatment reduces the risk of infectious disease, Hepatitis C and HIV infection – intravenous- drug users who enter and stay in treatment are up to six times less likely to become infected with HIV – and improves the prospects for getting and keeping a job up to 40 percent.

Myth 8: No one voluntarily seeks treatment until they hit rock bottom. There are many things that can motivate a person to enter and complete treatment before that happens. Pressure from family members, employers, and personal recognition that they have a problem can be powerful motivators. For teens, parents and school administrators are often driving forces in getting them into treatment before situations become dire.

Myth 9: People can successfully finish drug abuse treatment in a couple of weeks if they’re truly motivated. For treatment to have an effect, research indicates a minimum of 90 days of treatment for outpatient drug-free programs, and 21 days for short-term inpatient programs. Follow-up supervision and support are essential. In all recovery programs, the best predictor of success is the length of treatment. Patients who are treated for at least a year are more than twice as likely to remain drug free, and a recent study showed adolescents who met or exceeded the minimum treatment time were over one and a half times more likely to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

Myth 10: People who continue to abuse drugs after treatment are hopeless. Completing a treatment program is merely the first step in the struggle for recovery that can last a lifetime. Drug addiction is a chronic disorder; occasional relapses do not mean failure. Psychological stress from work or family problems, social cues- meeting somebody from the drug-using past – or the environment – encountering streets, objects or even smells associated with drug use can easily trigger a relapse. Addicts are most vulnerable to drug use during the few months immediately following their release from treatment. Recovery is a long process and frequently requires multiple treatment attempts before complete and consistent sobriety can be achieved.

The Twelve StepsTwelve Steps and Drug Rehab
The 12-step recovery program is the most widely recognized basis for success in recovery in drug rehab. Founded by Bill W. and Dr. Bob in 1939, the process of recovery has been described by Dr. Bob as, “Trust God, clean house, help others.” The 12-step model has since become the basis for almost every other self-help support group, including Cocaine Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and others.
The drug rehabs in the United States commonly offer the 12-step model as the basis for their recovery program. At the River Source we offer the finest holistic therapy and a 12-step recovery program.12-step meetings are held daily on the premises with transportation provide to outside meetings. Every client receives a comprehensive treatment program tailored to his or her individual needs in overcoming alcoholism or drug addiction.
The 12-Steps of Recovery
The 12-steps of recovery are an outline for a progression to spiritual wellness as defined by the founding members of Alcoholics Anonymous. Here are the 12-steps as excerpted from Alcoholics Anonymous:
1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His Will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Drug AddictionDrug abuse is different from a physical dependency on drugs commonly known as drug addiction. Drug addiction is usually characterized by the constant mental obsession or thought of the substance regardless of the possible negative effects on life. Drug addiction is not only a mental addiction, but also driven by the phenomenon of craving or uncontrollable urge to keep the substance in the body. If the drug is not maintained, the body goes into withdrawal symptoms that include nausea and vomiting, insomnia, irritability, diarrhea, bone and muscle aches, and possibly death.

Drug Abuse and Drug Addiction
Drug addiction and drug abuse are different in the aspect that drug addiction is physical. Drug abuse covers a wide area and includes everything from weekend using in social situations to a strong desire to use drugs even when it would do harm in the areas of everyday life. Drug addiction, on the other hand is a mental desire that feels like a need for drugs. Without the drug, withdrawal symptoms begin almost immediately. Quickly, these symptoms become very real. Followed by an overwhelming need to have the drug back in the system to stop the feeling of withdraws.

Things to look for in Drug Addiction
Here are some of the signs of drug addiction. They vary according to the type of drug and the length of time the drug has been used, but some symptoms almost always apply. Here are some to look for.
- Sudden change in personality.
- Extreme mood swings, anxiety and depression.
- Constant missing of appointments, being late, neglecting commitments.
- Putting themselves and others in dangerous situations while under the influence.
- No regard to anyone or anything if it gets in the way of there obtaining of the drug.

DetoxDetox (detoxification) is the first step in rehabilitation and treatment of drug addiction. Alcohol and drug abuse, over time, eventually causes one to develop an actual physical dependence on the drug(s). Detox is the process of managing the body’s physical withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs in order to minimize side effects and prevent potentially harmful consequences. Detox can result in severe consequences including: seizure, anxiety, hallucinations, nausea, high blood pressure, DTs (Delirium Tremens) and irregular heartbeat. Additional withdrawal symptoms often include: headaches, vomiting, excessive perspiration, agitation, loss of appetite and insomnia. Detox should not be attempted without medical supervision and assistance. There are a variety of methods and procedures for detox with varying lengths of time and varying intensity of side effects. For most people, detox on an impatient basis works best and is highly recommended.

Through our Naturopathic Clinic, The River Source provides individualized, caring, compassionate detox. Under the expert supervision of Dr. Chad Goetz, each client is prescribed a specific detoxification plan that also includes the naturopathic approach to replenishing the body’s natural building blocks of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The River Source’s Naturopathic Clinic has developed highly effective and safe detox plans for all major drug groups including: opiates, benzodiazepines, methamphetamines, cocaine and alcohol. Individualized detox plans are based, in part, on the client’s alcohol/drug use history, body weight, present physical stature, age, sex, medical history and even anxiety level. In some cases, depending on the addiction, certain detoxification drugs are used so that there is a more gradual, more manageable withdrawal phase. The River Source is particularly noted for its success in detoxification from and effectiveness in treating opiate addiction, especially hard-to-treat cases of methadone dependence.

Once a successful detox is assured and the client is physically stabilized, the process of drug rehabilitation and treatment can begin. The River Source specializes not only in detox, but also in treatment for all common drugs including: alcohol, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, methadone, oxycontin, marijuana, xanax, and ambient. Recovery from addiction is a lifelong process.
An inpatient rehab experience allows individuals the time and opportunity to restructure and reprioritize their lives so real, lasting change can begin. Along with detox, a thirty or sixty day stay in a healing, supportive, nurturing environment like the River Source allows individuals a chance to overcome the hopelessness – the shame and fear - of addiction.

Drug DetoxDrug detox (detoxification) is the first step in rehabilitation and treatment of drug addiction. Drug use, over time, eventually causes one to develop an actual physical dependence on the drug(s). Drug detox is the process of managing the body’s physical withdrawal from drugs in order to minimize side effects and prevent potentially harmful consequences. Drug detox can result in severe consequences including: seizure, anxiety, hallucinations, nausea, high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat. Additional withdrawal symptoms often include: headaches, vomiting, excessive perspiration, agitation, loss of appetite and insomnia. Drug detox should not be attempted without medical supervision and assistance. There are a variety of methods and procedures for drug detox with varying lengths of time and varying intensity of side effects. For most people, drug detox on an impatient basis works best and is highly recommended.

Through our Naturopathic Clinic, The River Source provides individualized, caring, compassionate drug detox. Under the expert supervision of Dr. Chad Goetz, each client is prescribed a specific detoxification plan that also includes the naturopathic approach to replenishing the body’s natural building blocks of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The River Source’s Naturopathic Clinic has developed highly effective and safe drug detox plans for all major drug groups including: opiates, benzodiazepines, methamphetamines, cocaine and alcohol. Individualized drug detox plans are based, in part, on the client’s drug use history, body weight, present physical stature, age, sex, medical history and even anxiety level. In some cases, depending on the drug addiction, certain detoxification drugs are used so that there is a more gradual, more manageable withdrawal phase. The River Source is particularly noted for its success in detoxification from and effectiveness in treating opiate addiction, especially hard-to-treat cases of methadone dependence.

Once a successful drug detox is assured and the client is physically stabilized, the process of drug rehabilitation and treatment can begin. The River Source specializes not only in drug detox, but also in drug treatment for all common drugs including: alcohol, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, methadone, oxycontin, marijuana, xanax, and ambient. Recovery from addiction is a lifelong process.
An inpatient rehab experience allows individuals the time and opportunity to restructure and reprioritize their lives so real, lasting change can begin. Along with drug detox, a thirty or sixty day stay in a healing, supportive, nurturing environment like the River Source allows individuals a chance to overcome the hopelessness – the shame and fear - of addiction.

Drug Rehab and the Cost to youDrug Rehab and Cost
Many people want to go to drug rehab but do not think it to be in there budget. It's important to understand that there is a wide variety of drug rehab centers, and the cost will play a part of what drug rehab you decide on. Some drug rehab centers are private, some are state-funded and others are located in hospitals. Some insurance plans will cover drug rehab but ultimately it's up to the person coming to the drug rehab to decide for him or her self which one fits there personal needs best.

Drug Rehab and its Effectiveness
Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. You have the state-funded centers with eight bunk-beds to a room and there are the all exclusive drug rehabs that cost a small fortune to stay in for 30 days. However, all the glitz and glamour in the drug rehab doesn't mean the drug treatment will be any more effective than a drug rehab center at a fraction of the cost. The more extravagant drug rehabs have much higher overhead and need to charge higher prices to cover their costs. A more luxurious stay at a vacation like rehab doesn't guarantee success in sobriety. When all is said and done, it is still a drug rehab with the ultimate goal of teaching you tools for your long-term sobriety.

The Rive Source offers a great treatment plan at a fraction of the cost. We are located in historic downtown Mesa, AZ. Our Holistic Wellness Clinic offers vitamin bag therapy, acupuncture and meditation all tailored into a personalized treatment plan for all of are clients. In addition we have an on-staff chef, transportation to and from the local gym and a yoga instructor that is here three times a week. The River Source is an affordable and well rounded option when considering a drug rehab.

PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSEPrescription drug abuse is a form of addiction, prescription drug abuse can begin with surgery or an inaccurate diagnosis. Prescription drug abuse does not discriminate, it effects everyone from a business man all the way to the homeless person on the street. Prescription drug abuse might even be the reason the person is homeless in the first place. What makes prescription drug abuse such a dangerous form of abuse is the fact that it can start off so innocent. Prescription drug abuse can begin with simple surgery and the doctor prescribing a painkiller.

The path to prescription drug abuse can take time or happen very quickly. It might begin as stated earlier with simple surgery. After the surgery is completed the doctor may prescribe the patient a painkiller. This painkiller can be an opiate-based painkiller. Some of the opiate-based painkillers are vicodin, percocet, lortab, codeine, and others. Once a person takes the first pill the chemical is released into the blood stream.

Once the chemical is released into the blood stream the person will begin to feel the effect of the drug. Once the effect is felt the person may begin to feel the desire for more. If the person begins to take the drug other than prescribed abuse begins.

The frightening aspect is that even though there is a huge difference between abuse and addiction both can be fatal.

Treatment can be an answer to the problem of prescription drug abuse and addiction. A great reason to call the River Source is to save your or a loved ones life. Please call the River Source if you or a loved is having a problem with prescription medications and want to be free of the abuse or addiction of prescribed medications.

Constitutional Hydrotherapy

Constitutional hydrotherapy is a special technique in which alternating hot and cold compresses are applied to the torso and abdomen which greatly improves recovery from various illnesses, both acute and chronic by stimulating our vis medicatrix naturae, our own body’s natural ability to heal itself.

During the treatment the patient lies comfortably on a soft table while hot towels are applied over the upper torso to warm the body. Once the body is warm, a single cold towel is applied in exchange for the hot one. This process occurs twice: once on the front of the body, and again, on the back.

The hot compress causes local vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels), causing blood to be drawn away from the core and to rise toward the blood vessels closer to the skin. Then, the alternating cold compress causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels) which drives the blood back into the core of our body. In addition, the cold compress (also called a warming compress) is kept on the torso for 10 minutes, allowing body to warm it. This process increases circulation and immune function. Some sources state that this warming process increases white blood cell production and lymph flow throughout the body. This increase in circulation is very beneficial for detoxification and excretion of toxins from the body, and increasing tone of the vessels.

At the River Source Treatment Center, we add another dimension to the traditional constitutional hydrotherapy to enhance its benefits. Hydrotherapy researchers have shown that an increase in blood flow is delivered to the underlying organs in response to stimulation of the skin above it. For this reason, electrodes from a sine wave machine are applied to the skin above the adrenal glands and abdomen to deliver a mild, soothing current to those organs. Stimulating the adrenals and intestines increase the body’s ability to recover from stresses at an optimal rate. The adrenal support is vital for our clients because prolonged use and abuse of pharmaceutical and illicit substances have been known to decrease the function of this crucial gland, responsible for the direct production of vital hormones in our body, and linked to our brain’s signaling pathways (via the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis). Long term use of Opiates and other substances have also been known to decrease immune function, especially by disrupting the intestinal flora and its tissue: the Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT) and Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT), which account for 70% of our body’s immune system. Enhancing the function of the GALT and MALT would allow the body to protect itself from foreign pathogens so that it may divert more of its energy to healing and rebuilding the body during their stay at the River Source.

Patients who receive Constitutional Hydrotherapy report improved sleep, increased vitality, decreased recovery time from colds and flus, and an overall peaceful and serene detoxifying experience. As with all therapies, consult your Naturopathic Physician before receiving constitutional hydrotherapy and receive all treatments under a physician’s supervision for your safety.
